About Teleprompter

The teleprompter is a browser tool for auto-scrolling a script. Paste a speech or lines of dialogue and the text scrolls upward at a steady pace in a black preview panel with white text. You can adjust the scroll speed and font size, and switch on mirror mode for use with a reflective-glass prompter rig. It suits short videos, live streams, speech practice and reading to camera. It only displays and scrolls text: it does not record audio or video, it cannot listen to your voice and follow your pace, and it has no full-screen button, so you need to put the browser into full screen yourself.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your script into 'Script content', using blank lines to separate paragraphs. On first load it contains a short placeholder you can simply replace.
  2. Drag the 'Scroll speed' slider (5 to 150) and the 'Font size' slider (16 to 64 px). Each label shows its current value.
  3. Click 'Start' and the text begins to scroll up; the button becomes 'Pause'. Pausing holds the current position and 'Start' resumes from there.
  4. Click 'Reset' to stop and jump back to the beginning. It does not erase your text.
  5. If you use a reflective prompter, click 'Mirror mode' to flip the preview horizontally. The button changes to 'Unmirror' and a second click restores it.
  6. For real use, put the browser into full screen (for example with F11) to get a larger picture, as the hint above the preview also says.

A usage scenario

Say you're recording a one-minute talking-head video. Paste the script in, split it into short paragraphs, set the font size to around 40 so it reads clearly from an arm's length away, and do a dry run at the default speed. If the text moves slower than you speak, drag the speed slider to the right until it matches your natural reading pace, and note that number for next time. Press 'Reset' before the real take, then 'Start'. No words-per-minute figure is claimed here, because the slider value has no fixed conversion to reading speed and you need to find the right setting by trying it.

What it supports and where it stops

  • The speed number is not words per minute. It is converted to a pixel speed using real elapsed time, so it does not depend on the display's refresh rate. Working from the code, the text moves about the speed value times 0.75 pixels per second: roughly 30 px/s at the default of 40 and about 112 px/s at the maximum of 150. These are estimates derived from reading the code, not measurements. If you scroll the preview by hand and press 'Start', it continues from where you left it; scrolling stops automatically at the end of the text, and pressing 'Start' at the end restarts from the top.
  • Mirror mode just flips the preview horizontally, so mouse scrolling direction and text selection feel reversed while it is on.
  • There is no countdown, voice following, line highlighting or colour choice. Text is bold white on a black background.
  • Only the script text is saved as a draft. Speed, font size and the mirror switch are not saved and return to their defaults after a reload (speed 40, size 32, mirror off).
  • The preview panel has a fixed height and cannot be resized; full screen relies on the browser's own full-screen mode.

FAQ: Will I lose my script?

About half a second after you stop typing, the script is saved to your browser's local storage. If you refresh the page or accidentally close the tab, it is usually still there when you come back. In a private window, after clearing browser data, or on another browser or device, it won't be, so keep a separate backup of anything important.

FAQ: Why does the text scroll so slowly?

The default setting is a gentle scroll that suits short scripts or a slow delivery. Drag the slider to the right for more speed, up to 150. If the maximum is still too slow for you, a larger font size means the same pixel distance covers fewer words.

FAQ: When should I use mirror mode?

Professional prompters bounce the screen off an angled piece of semi-transparent glass, and the text must be flipped on screen to read correctly in the reflection. If you're just reading from your monitor, leave mirror mode off.

FAQ: Can I use it on a phone?

The page opens in a mobile browser and the sliders and buttons work. The screen is small and the preview height is fixed, so increase the font size and consider full screen or landscape. Phones differ in refresh rate, so the scroll pace will vary from device to device.

Privacy and processing

Displaying and scrolling the script happens entirely in your browser, and the tool makes no network requests. The draft is stored in your own browser's local storage, not uploaded to a server and not visible to anyone else. To remove it, clear the text box or clear this site's data in your browser settings.
