About Text to Image

Text to Image lays out a piece of text on a picture so you can share it as a card: a quote, an announcement, a book excerpt or a one-line poster. Type your text, adjust the font size, choose a background colour (or upload a photo as the background), check the preview and download a PNG. It is not a layout program. There is one text style, fixed left alignment and a fixed width, which suits quick, clean cards rather than elaborate designs.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the wording into the "Text content" box. Line breaks you enter are kept, and a sample text is pre-filled that you can simply replace.
  2. Drag the "Font size" slider to resize the text. The range is 20 to 64 px and the current value is shown in the label.
  3. In "Background", click one of the five colour swatches: near-black, dark green, orange-red, off-white and white. With the off-white or white swatch the text switches to dark; on the others it is white.
  4. To use your own picture, click "Use image" and pick a file. The picture is scaled and cropped to fill the card, and a semi-transparent black layer is added so the white text stays readable. To go back to a flat colour, click "Remove background image, use a solid color".
  5. The "Preview" canvas updates as you change things. When you are happy, click "Download image" to save text-card.png.

A practical scenario

Say you want to post a passage you copied from a book but do not want to paste a big block of plain text. Paste the excerpt, set the font size to around 32, pick the dark green background and download. You get an 800-pixel-wide card. For more atmosphere, use a landscape photo as the background; the tool darkens it automatically so the text stays legible. The height depends on how many lines the text needs: short text keeps the minimum height of 400 pixels, and longer text makes the card taller. A very long passage therefore produces a very tall image, so check the size before posting somewhere with dimension limits.

Supported range and known limits

  • The image is always 800 pixels wide, at least 400 pixels tall, and grows with the number of lines. You cannot choose custom dimensions or ratios such as 1:1 or 9:16.
  • Text is left-aligned with a 60-pixel left margin and the block is centred vertically. There is no centre or right alignment, and you cannot colour, bold or resize part of the text.
  • The font is the system's default sans-serif in a semi-bold weight. You cannot choose a font, and Chinese, Japanese and similar scripts only display properly if suitable fonts are installed on your device.
  • Chinese wraps character by character: a line breaks as soon as it would exceed the width. English words are moved whole to the next line, and a word is only split in the middle if it is wider than an entire line by itself. You can also press Enter yourself where you want a break.
  • Backgrounds are five preset flat colours or one uploaded picture. There are no gradients, custom colours or patterns. Text colour switches automatically between white and dark and cannot be set by hand.
  • PNG is the only export. With a huge amount of text the image becomes extremely tall, and in extreme cases the browser's canvas size limits may make the download fail or come out blank.
  • The sample text is filled in using the interface language at the moment the page first loads; switching language afterwards does not change text already shown.

FAQ: Can English words get cut off at the end of lines?

Normally not. The tool treats a run of English letters, digits and punctuation as one unit and moves it whole to the next line if it does not fit. Chinese has no spaces between words, so it still breaks per character. A word (or a long string without spaces, such as a URL) is only split if it is wider than a full line on its own. Press Enter wherever you want a specific break.

FAQ: How big is the generated image?

The width is fixed at 800 pixels. The height varies with content and is at least 400 pixels; it is roughly the number of lines times the line height plus 160 pixels, where the line height is 1.5 times the font size. To control the height, reduce the font size or shorten the text. The result is an ordinary PNG file whose size depends on the content and background.

FAQ: What if the text is hard to read on my background photo?

The tool already lays a 40% black overlay over the photo and forces white text, which keeps most photos readable. If the photo is exceptionally bright or has a very busy pattern, the text may still not stand out. Increase the font size, switch to a flat colour, or darken or blur the photo with another tool first.

FAQ: Can I save as JPEG or change the text colour?

Export is PNG only, and the text colour cannot be chosen: light backgrounds (off-white and white) get dark text, and every other background gets white text. If you need JPEG or WEBP, take the downloaded PNG to the Image Format Converter.

Privacy and how files are processed

The image is generated entirely in your browser. Your text is drawn onto a canvas on the page, and the PNG is exported straight from that canvas when you download. The text you type and any background photo you upload are not sent to a server, and no account is needed. The page does not save your text; refreshing or closing it clears everything.
