Calculate tip amount and per-person split
Tipping customs vary by country and region — some restaurant bills already include a service charge (no extra tip needed). Always go by local custom and the actual situation.
The Tip Calculator takes a bill amount and the tip percentage you choose, then works out the tip, the total including the tip, and how much each person pays if several people split it. It only multiplies and divides. It does not know the tipping customs where you are, does not break tax out separately, and cannot tell whether your bill already includes a service charge. The percentages commonly used when eating abroad, 10%, 15%, 18% and 20%, are available as one-tap buttons.
These numbers come from running the same formulas as the tool. A bill of 500 with a 15% tip gives a tip of 75.00 and a total of 575.00. One person pays 575.00, and three people splitting it pay 191.67 each. Another case: a bill of 328.5 at 18% split four ways gives a tip of 59.13, a total of 387.63 and 96.91 each. A bill of 100 at 20% split two ways gives a tip of 20.00, a total of 120.00 and 60.00 each.
Customs vary widely. In some countries restaurant bills include a service charge by default and nothing more is expected, in some places 15% to 20% is typical, and in others tipping is not a tradition at all. The tool has no country rules built in, so follow local custom and what the bill says.
Yes: total = bill + bill x percentage / 100. The tool does not treat tax separately.
Each amount is shown to two decimals. 575 / 3 is 191.666..., which displays as 191.67, and three of those add up to a cent more. When paying, one person can simply pay a cent less.
The tool only works from the bill amount you type in. Whether to use the pre-tax or after-tax figure depends on local custom. Enter whichever amount you want the tip based on.
The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The bill amount and other values are not sent to a server or stored. Refreshing the page restores the defaults.
