To-Do List

A simple task list, autosaved locally

No to-dos yet — add your first one

Your list is saved automatically in this browser, so it survives page refreshes and reopening the tab — but clearing browser data or switching devices will lose it.

About To-Do List

This is a deliberately minimal to-do list. Type a task, press Enter or click 'Add' to put it on the list, tick the box when it is done, and delete anything you no longer need (you are asked to confirm first). You can also edit a task in place. Everything is saved in your own browser's local storage (localStorage), so it is still there next time you open the page in the same browser. To be clear about what is missing: there are no accounts, no cloud sync, no reminders or notifications, no due dates, no tags or categories, and you cannot drag tasks into a new order. It suits a few small jobs for the day, not complex project management.

How to use it

  1. Type a task into the box at the top and press Enter or click 'Add' on the right. Empty or whitespace-only input is ignored. The new task appears at the top of the list.
  2. When you finish a task, click the box to its left. The box fills in with a check mark and the text turns grey with a strikethrough. Click again to mark it as not done.
  3. Use the 'All', 'Active' and 'Done' buttons to change what you see. If a category has nothing in it you see 'Nothing in this category yet', and if the whole list is empty you see 'No to-dos yet — add your first one'.
  4. Click the pencil icon on a task, or double-click its text, to edit it in place: press Enter or click the check mark to save, Esc or the cross to discard. If you empty the text it is not saved and the old text stays. Click the trash icon and the row first shows 'Delete? Yes / No'; only 'Yes' actually deletes it, and there is no undo afterwards.
  5. Once at least one task is done, 'Clear completed (N)' appears at the top right, where N is the number of finished tasks. Clicking it turns the label into 'Clear N completed? Yes / No'; only 'Yes' removes all finished tasks at once, and 'No' cancels.

A worked example

Say you have three jobs this morning. Enter 'Reply to client email', 'Book next week's meeting room' and 'Call Mum and Dad', pressing Enter after each. Because new tasks go to the top, the list reads from top to bottom: 'Call Mum and Dad', 'Book next week's meeting room', 'Reply to client email'. When the email is sent, click the box beside it; it turns grey with a strikethrough and 'Clear completed (1)' appears. Now click 'Active' and only the two remaining tasks show; click 'Done' and only the email shows. Before you leave, click 'Clear completed (1)' and answer 'Yes' to 'Clear 1 completed?' to remove it. The other two stay on the list and are still there when you open the page tomorrow. This demonstrates how the controls behave and uses no statistics.

Where is the data kept, and for how long?

Tasks are stored as JSON text in your browser's localStorage under the key toolbox-todo-list. Every time you add, tick or delete something it is written automatically; there is no save button. Unless you clear this site's data, the tasks remain through page refreshes and browser restarts. The data exists only in this browser for this site and is not uploaded anywhere.

Supported features and known limits

  • Data lives only in this browser on this device. Switch computer or browser, use a private window, or clear the site's data and the earlier tasks are gone. Nothing syncs between phone and computer.
  • In private mode, or in a browser that blocks local storage, the page still works but tasks will not survive a refresh. The code ignores storage errors and shows no warning.
  • You can edit a task's text (pencil icon or double-click), but there is no edit history.
  • There is no sorting, dragging, priority, due date, reminder or grouping. New tasks always go on top, and finished tasks are not moved to the bottom.
  • Deleting a single task asks 'Delete? Yes / No', and 'Clear completed' asks 'Clear N completed? Yes / No'; once confirmed, neither can be undone.
  • There is no length limit on task text, so a very long entry makes its row tall. Leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, and identical tasks can be added more than once.
  • If you use several tabs of the page in the same browser at once, they do not stay in sync. The last write wins and tabs can overwrite each other, so use a single tab.
  • Browsers cap localStorage (typically a few megabytes). That is plenty for an everyday list but not for large amounts of content.

Will my tasks still be there after I close the browser?

Yes. They are in local storage, which does not depend on the browser staying open. Data disappears only if you clear this site's data (for example by ticking site data or cookies and cache in your browser's clear-data settings), if you use a private window, if the browser is uninstalled or reset, or if you switch to another browser or device. If the list matters, copy it somewhere else from time to time.

Why can't I see my computer's tasks on my phone?

Because there is no cloud account. The data belongs to the current browser on the current device, so your phone and computer each hold a completely separate list. This keeps the design simple, and it also means your tasks are never uploaded to a server.

Can I get back a task I deleted by mistake?

No. Once done, deleting or clearing completed tasks takes effect immediately, and there is no trash bin or undo. Both a single delete and 'Clear completed' ask for a Yes/No confirmation, but after you confirm there is no undo, so double-check anything important.

Will 'Clear completed' delete tasks I haven't finished?

No. It removes only ticked tasks and leaves unfinished ones alone. The number on the button is how many will be removed, and you are asked to confirm first.

Privacy and processing

Reading and writing the list happens in your browser. The code uses only localStorage to save data, sends your tasks to no server, and has no account system. This means anyone who can use the same browser profile may be able to see what you saved, so on a shared computer remember to delete your tasks or clear the site's data.
